VIDEO. Have you seen green lattes in your coffee bar? Tried them? It’s the matcha trend! You’ll find it in smoothies, ice tea, ice cream and baked good too. Matcha means ‘powdered tea’ and is typically ground into a fine powder from Japanese green tea leaves. With traditional tea, the leaves are discarded after infused in the water. With matcha, you drink the ground leaves.
The tea is concentrated and has three times the level of the polyphenol (EGCG) than other green teas. It may help may help protect against cancer and heart disease. With a concentrated green tea taste and three times as much caffeine as a cup of steeped tea, you probably don’t want to drink it too close to bedtime. To make this invigorating drink whisk one teaspoon of matcha powder in a bowl with one third cup hot water, until it froths to create a bright green tea drink. Add a sweetener if you desire.
