Should you take omega-3 supplements? Consume foods with GMOs? Switch to agave syrup? Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs), the nutrition experts, expect the latest science-based research on topics like these and many more which were presented at the annual meeting of the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. I just returned from this year’s fabulous meeting where I had a chance to lecture, sit in on stimulating research and touch base with peers.
Preventing medical errors in nutrition and dietetics practice is an ongoing required course along with a course on ethics. My colleague Dr. Catherine Christie, Associate Dean of the Brooks College of Health at the University of North Florida, and I have been teaching this 2-hour course annually for well over five years. Truly, this can be a very dry, totally boring subject so we look for ways to make the information real to professionals practicing everyday.
Every year the convention has exhibits which highlight the latest food and medical products for ‘show and tell’. Beth Dover from Dover Branding Group and I covered the exhibit for our Aussie colleague Amanda Clark who has a fabulous line of Portion Perfection weight loss and bariatric products. We think the products are so well done that we partner with her on our website.
Beth’s efforts turned the exhibit space into a super showcase. Crazy busy, I had a blast working along side her and Tasha Brickhouse, an RDN-to-be.
All work and no play makes for a load of stress so we checked out the local seafood and tried these fish tacos. Beautifully presented and a lean source protein, what’s not to like?
One of the most fun and beneficial aspects of an annual convention is connecting with peers and having valuable resources to ask questions and discuss topics/research with. There is so much going on in the field of nutrition that most RDNs specialize in an area just as physicians do such as bilingual RDN Joan Zeckler Williams whose company translates nutrition materials into multiple languages.
A career highlight for me, I was awarded the 2015 Media Award by my good friend, FAND President Alyssa Greenstein. Alyssa and I have worked together on numerous projects and though they may be detailed and technical, she always makes me laugh. So honored to receive the award.
Long hours and nonstop conversation call for a time to recharge and renew. In Florida swimming is the way to do this. It’s been so hot that the cool water refreshed and enhanced sleep, burned calories and gave an attitude adjustment at the end of a busy day. Life is good.
Keep in touch.
